Lalla Colline
Towered over by huge regrowth trees and hidden from view, an abandoned small farm.
The house trapped in scrub with windows broken and boarded. An old stables collapsed under a fallen tree. The old Lalla post office and the Lalla Presbyterian church sit quietly derelict nearby. Beside the wall of the small brick creamery, there amongst the blackberry a single grapevine struggled to grow - along with an idea.
From then to now is best described with the analogy of making a wine barrel, where each oak stave represents the gifts of nature (Ancient Permian soil), and your choices (Grape clones and trellis). Most importantly you pray to the wine gods for good luck because success is only known when you take the first wines from your wine barrel.
There has been something very special created here, with hand crafted wines of high quality the result. These wines were made with hard work. Work that moves with the seasons and nature. Work that relies on relationships with others and this beautiful place.
An important note- Three years ago while taking soil samples, I found a small aboriginal hand tool of silicate stone originating from the east coast of Tasmania. I would like to acknowledge the original owners of this land and pay respect to their elders both past and present.
